Starting a business by the North Devon seaside?

A new grant is available for people who are starting new businesses, or have been trading for less than twelve months, in the Bideford and coastal parishes of Torridge.

Called the Seaside Success Fund, the new grant is administered by North Devon+ and should provide some 30 entrepreneurs and start-ups in Torridge with funding, business support and training.

The £40,000 funding has been made available by Torridge District Council and individuals in Bideford and the surrounding coastal parishes are eligible to apply.

Successful applicants will receive funding as well as advice and support from one of the dedicated and fully qualified business advisors at North Devon+.

Businesses can apply for funding for the purchase of equipment, product development or testing, research, marketing, rent, specific Licences and/or software, or training.

Applicants will be expected to provide cash flow forecasts for their business.

Bideford business start-up grants

There’s not a lot of help available to people starting a new business.

Free advice and support is available through the ICAEW Business Advice Service and there’s information on the Business Link website. But in terms of financial assistance there’s not a lot out there. Most grants schemes only apply to established businesses. Often they need to have been trading for several years.

There is, however, one grant available that can help new businesses start-up in Bideford.

Bideford Bridge Trust offer a business start-up grant of up to £4,500 per new business. The scheme is administered by Mike Lillis of Enterprise Start-up North Devon

The eligibility criteria are as follows, you must:

be living in Bideford or the surrounding area;
have a business idea;
be unemployed (or have business idea likely to employ others who might be unemployed); and,
be unable to finance the start-up from own means.

StartUp Britain – subsidised loans for new businesses

On 28 May 2012 the Department of Business launched a subsidised loan scheme through StartUp Britain.

Anyone living in England who is aged between 18 and 24 is eligible to apply for a loan of up to £2,500.

You will need to prepare a business plan.

As well as the loan, applicants receive business support and mentoring and a free copy of the StartUp Loans Kit, which offers the guidance you need to start a business plus over £500-worth of offers on products from business cards to websites, netbooks and work suits.

There’s a internet forum where you can discuss issues effecting your new business with other people who are in the same situation or have already set up their own businesses.
